It is with great pleasure that Ardmore announces the release of the Zambezi Zebra Cushion in partnership with the Hilcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT), a non-profit organization close to Fee Halsted’s heart. HACT started 26 years ago in an attempt to address the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on communities. The men and women of HACT are enrolled in various self-empowering programs such as WOZA Moya which teaches Zulu craft skills such as pottery, beading, sewing, recycling, crochet, wirework and quilting. Ardmore has lost many artists from HIV/AIDS from 1998 to 2010 including their dear colleagues, Bonnie Ntshalintshali, Wonderboy Nxumalo and thirty other special artists.
In keeping with the Ardmore style and Zulu traditions,
our Zebra Cushion showcases the handiwork of artists in design, embroidery and beadwork. Each cushion is meticulously hand- embellished on printed velvet. The cushion design is inspired from the ceramic motifs of Siyabonga Mabaso reflected in the leopard and jackal imagery and Nondumiso Mfuphi’s decoratively striped zebra symbolizing the acceptance of differences and uniqueness.
Ardmore’s aim was to create something special for the unique home-owner that adds a cosiness though the velvet and black and pink colour tones that are reminiscent of Winter’s cosy fireside living. The bead and embroidered embellishments add a little more rich African timelessness, making this cushion something very special.
